La Grèce a été frappée par "des pluies de 600 à 800 mm en 24 heures en Magnésie", dans le centre de la Grèce, "un phénomène inédit" ces dernières décennies, a indiqué mercredi un météorologue, Dimitris Ziakopoulos.

"Il semble que la région montagneuse de Magnésie a été touchée par 600 à 800 mm de pluie en 24 heures", "un phénomène inédit dans les données météorologiques du pays", mesurées depuis 1955, a indiqué cet expert, vice-président du centre des études de la gestion des crises du ministère de la Crise climatique, lors d'une conférence de presse à Athènes.

Deux personnes ont été retrouvées mortes ces deux derniers jours en Magnésie et au moins quatre sont portées disparues dans cette région, située à quelque 330 km au nord d'Athènes.

Les trombes d'eau qui se sont abattues, essentiellement dans la journée de mardi, sur la ville de Volos, chef-lieu de Magnésie, et sur le mont Pélion représentent "une grande quantité (d'eau") pour la Grèce ainsi que pour de nombreuses régions en Europe", a estimé Dimitris Ziakopoulos lors d'une conférence de presse commune avec le ministre de la Crise Climatique, Vassilis Kikilias.

"Il s'agit d'une situation extraordinaire", a-t-il insisté.

Le ministre a souligné de son côté que "l'intensité et la durée du phénomène sont également inédites".

Face aux critiques sur les victimes et les importants dégâts provoqués par les inondations en Magnésie et dans les départements voisins, Vassilis Kikilias a indiqué que les infrastructures du pays devaient être réorganisées pour parer à "la crise climatique".

Les pluies torrentielles en Grèce doivent durer jusqu'à jeudi après-midi, selon les prévisions du service météorologique national (EMY).
