(FILES) Captain Ibrahim Traore, Burkina Faso's new president, leaves the ceremony for the 35th anniversary of Thomas Sankaras assassination, in Ouagadougou, on October 15, 2022. An attack that killed dozens of civilians and security personnel in north-central Burkina Faso in late August 2024 captures the ruling junta's failure to contain escalating jihadist violence, experts have said.
Junta chief Captain Ibrahim Traore, 36, seized power in the West African country in a 2022 coup, vowing to regain control within the first six months over a nation plagued by jihadist armed groups.
Thousands have died and about two million have been displaced by fighting that has raged on since 2015, when an insurgency spilled over to Burkina Faso from neighbouring Mali.
